Peru has a truly magical aura of epic landscapes, ancient footpaths, diverse wildlife and innumerable indigenous peoples and languages. Home to the Incan empire, once the largest nation on Earth, the valleys around Cusco are full of Inca ruins, including the fabled Machu Picchu, lost city of the Incas. Escaping detection by the Spanish conquerors, it is know for its sheer beauty and near inaccessibility and is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
