GRANADA
Granada is the capital of the province with the same name and is
situated in the eastern part of the region of Andalusia. The city
of Granada is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains
at the confluence of the Darro and Genil rivers. As the last Moorish
capital on the Iberian peninsula it holds great symbolic value.
The magical red fortress of the Alhambra, and the labyrinthine
streets of the Albaicin, make Granada, and Spain’s, Moorish
heritage a tangible part of its present. Granada is a cosmopolitan
city whose thriving student and international population still retains
the essence of Andalusia’s traditional friendliness and passion
for life.
MADRID
Madrid is Europe’s highest lying capital (alt 646m/2,120 ft)
and stands in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama in the middle
of the Meseta, right in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula. It
is a very hospitable city, known for the quality of its light, with
a dry continental climate that is very hot in summer and cold, yet
sunny, in winter.
It became the capital in the 16C at a time when Spain ruled over
a vast empire. The city’s main monuments, Classical and Baroque
in style, were built during the 17,18 and 19C.
Madrid has a furious pace – it is the capital of contemporary
Spanish cultural life. It is Spain’s leading city as far as
banks, insurance companies, universities, administrative bodies
and political institutions are concerned.
